FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR STUDENTS

 

What is the Wellness Center? Where is it?

  • Your safe place in Sobrato! You can come here just to have a good time or connect with your friends. It is a great place to talk to someone if you need to talk. There are several awesome spots with armchairs where you can just relax by our waterfall, and we also have some tables for artmaking and puzzles. 

  • The Wellness Center is a large room right next to the Counseling Center in building B, right behind the administration building. 

 

What do I do when I need to talk to someone?

  • You can come to the Wellness Center before school, during brunch, lunch and after school. There is always someone, whether this is Ms. Martina or Ms. Ruby. Please tell them that you need to talk to someone about how you are feeling. Please let them know if you need to talk to someone urgently. 

  • You can come to the Counseling Center and ask to talk to Ms. Martina

  • You can submit a referral here.

When can I come to the Wellness Center?

  • You can come before school, during brunch and lunch, and sometimes after school. 

  • You can definitely come during class if you are feeling anxious or depressed, or if you just need to talk to someone. Just don’t forget to tell your teacher that you need to go to the Wellness Center. Your teacher will give you a hall pass and you can just come. 

 

Who can submit a wellness referral?

  • Anyone! The wellness referral can be submitted by you, your friends, teachers, academic counselors, your parents. You will need to fill out some information to let us know about what is going on and how urgently you need to talk.

Who works at the Wellness Center?

  • When you come, you will be greeted by our Ms. Ruby! She’s a great listener and she’s really supportive of everyone. You can ask her any questions you have. 

  • You can also meet Ms. Martina in the Wellness Center. Ms. Martina is a therapist and you can talk to her when you’re having a difficult time. She also does therapy sessions with our students who need more support.

 

What is the first therapy session like? I’ve never done therapy before and I don’t know what to expect.

  • Our therapist Ms. Martina will ask you some questions about how you are feeling and what brought you to her office. She will also ask you questions about your past and present, and might ask you about your plans for the future. This is a time when you get to know each other, so don’t hesitate to ask her some questions too. 

 

What activities does the Wellness Center offer if I am anxious or depressed?

  • We have lots of awesome activities to offer! You can use our fidget toys, you can do puzzles. We also have coloring sheets and origami paper, and you can also bring your own art projects to work on. We also have beads to make bracelets. 

 

I don’t really want my parents to know that I am going to therapy. What can be done about it?

  • In most cases, a therapist is required to keep information discussed during therapy private. Confidential information can be disclosed with your permission.

  • However, there are exceptions to confidentiality. If the therapist determines that you are a danger to yourself or others, specific steps might be taken to ensure your safety. Please remember that therapists are also mandated reporters and have to report cases of child abuse.

 

How long can I stay in the Wellness Center for?

  • If you come before school or during breaks you have to go back to class when the bell rings. 

  • If you come during class you can stay for about 15 to 20 minutes depending on how you feel. You will get a hall pass from Ms. Ruby so you’re not marked absent from your class.

 

I am worried about my friend, I think they need to see a therapist. What can I do?

I am already talking to my academic counselor. What is the difference between this counselor and the Wellness Center counselor?

  • Both the wellness counselor and academic counselor can support you when you are having a rough time in school. The academic counselors can help you talk with your teachers about your academic progress, and they can also give you some tips on moving towards your future career. The wellness counselor can talk with you about various problems you are dealing with, both in school and in your personal life. The wellness counselor also provides therapy and can give you support when you’re struggling emotionally.

 

I think I need to see a therapist/counselor. How do I go about it?

  • You can tell Ms. Ruby and she will connect you to our therapist/counselor Ms. Martina. 

  • Or, you can just find Ms. Martina in the Wellness Center or in her little office in the Counseling Center

  • You can also fill out a referral form here. Ms. Martina will meet with you within a couple of days depending on the urgency of your referral. 

I think that I am having a really hard time keeping myself safe. I think I need to be seen as soon as possible. How can you help me?

  • Come to the Wellness Center! Ms. Ruby and Ms. Martina can help you!
